It is time for this tech animal to give you all some tough love. If you aren’t committed to doing a social media account correctly, then CLOSE IT DOWN. It looks far worse for you to have a page that is empty and neglected than it does for you not to have one at all. Wouldn’t you rather have people wonder why you don’t have a Facebook account than know you don’t care enough to keep up with it?
And don’t get me wrong. I’m going to let you off the hook. It is OKAY to not care about social media. But don’t let everybody on the internet know that you don’t. There are lots of reasons to have a social media page…but “just to have it” is not one of them. If you aren’t willing to commit the time and energy (which doesn’t need to be much) it takes to keep your social media accounts up, then please just delete them. There are plenty of other ways to reach people and build your business if social media doesn’t fit your style.
Now, if you ARE committed to doing it right, there are plenty of different strategies you can go about managing your social media pages. That is a discussion for another time. I will, however, leave you with my thoughts on one strategy. I hate automated social media posts. I see so many agents who use a service that auto-posts listings or articles about things on their behalf. Nothing could make you disappear faster on social media. If I subscribe to your business social media page, I want something from you…that truly represents your business. I want some videos with your clients. I want some information about your neighborhood events. I want some stuff that is uniquely you and your business. Agents are actually paying to put out cookie cutter content and expecting to engage their sphere of influence this way. Imagine if I used a technology article service to automatically send out this column on my behalf. Would it have my voice? Would you find it genuine? Absolutely not. It would be a waste of both of our time.
If you can’t think of anything to post on social media about your business, you may want to rethink how you are viewing your business. Your business should be an extension of you…your ideals, your expertise, your passion. That’s what people want to buy into. That’s what building a brand is all about. If you are having trouble formulating what it is your business represents, talk about it with your business coach and then come talk to me about implementing that into your online presence. But please don’t have a social media account just to have one. Those types of pages are a dime a dozen.
